UK speciality paper and materials manufacturer James Cropper PLC has launched a renewable, recyclable moulded packaging product that it is calling a "sustainable alternative to plastic." The new material is made entirely using renewable natural fibres from sustainably managed forests, and can be recycled with household paper.

The company says that the new moulded paper packaging offers the colour, quality and performance benefits of plastic within a fully sustainable product. It can also be customized with embossing or different fibre blends to create textures and finishes not offered by plastic.

Materials technology is set to disrupt the packaging industry. A moulded packaging product made of entirely renewable materials, that can be recycled easily within the household offers brands a truly viable alternative to plastic. Consumers will be delighted to be able to deal easily and responsibly with inserts and are sure to respond positively to companies that show they care about the environment. The next challenge will be communicating to the consumers on-pack that they can indeed add a bright pink moulded insert to their paper recycling.
